A very low-income community in the Nagaswatte area of Kirulapone had been selected by the Association of Former International Civil Servants (AFICS), Sri Lanka for their planned project in 2015. There had been popular requests from the female members of this community for a training facility in sewing, which they intended to use for self-employment. The Singer Company had offered to support the initiative by providing the services of a seamstress to train them for a nominal fee of Rs 6,000 per head for a course of four months duration. Eight members registered for the course.
I/DE/A/S stepped in with a full sponsorship for all eight trainees. The community, confirming their commitment and appreciation for this project, undertook to facilitate the seamstress with lunch and transport collectively.
All eight members completed the basic course in sewing and dress making that would enhance their opportunities for income generation.
