The last few days of November 2025 saw Sri Lanka being severely affected by its worst floods in 20 years as a result of cyclone Ditwah and the ensuing heavy rains. Almost all 25 districts of the country were severely affected leaving thousands of men, women and children homeless. Heavy rains led to around 1200 landslides. Overflowing of reservoirs, tanks and main rivers including Mahaweli, Kalu and Kelani rivers caused floods in various areas of the island, leading to tremendous loss of life and property.
IDEAS joined in the emergency relief efforts for the flood victims by responding to the request from Khettarama temple relief centre that housed people from the Wellampitiya area.
There were 35 families in total, with 120 men, women and children including several toddlers and infants. All of them were provided with 2 innerwear and 2 sets of outerwear garments, sorted and individually packaged according to age and size. IDEAS members came together to purchase the garments, sort and pack individual parcels and distribute them to the camp inmates on 04 December 2025, within 24 hours of the initial request.
